Accessible Considerations with the JAVA Launch

Solution

Updated June 2012

This tutorial is for individuals who use a screen reader and need to enter a web conference room using JAVA. It provides additional details to the information already found in the How To Log Into A Room with Windows and MAC tutorial.

The first time you try to enter a room using JAVA, a JAVA security dialog will appear, asking you if you want to run the application. This small JAVA application installs the plug-in needed for the tcConference technology. Unfortunately, this dialog is 100% non-accessible. But there is a "work-around".

The following steps will guide you through the work-around for Windows - this procedure is required only once:

  1. Load the login URL into the Browser.
  2. Click on the link to enter the room.
  3. JAVA security requirement for Windows (see below for MAC).
    1. The JAVA security dialog will display.
    2. The cursor is positioned on a selection box to "Always trust content from this publisher" - it is already pre-selected and should be left that way.
    3. Press Tab once - this will position you at the OK button.
    4. Press the Spacebar to push the OK button (this was tested only with JAWS - but it is probably similar with other screen readers).
  4. The login form is displayed.
  5. Enter your name and, if required, the password.
  6. Press "Log On".

The next time the user logs in, steps 3a to 3d will not be required or shown. After they click the link to enter the room, users will be taken directly to the form asking for the name and password.

The procedure is slightly different on the MAC. The JAVA launch is the only option available for MAC.

The following steps will guide you through the work-around for MAC - this procedure is also required only once:

  1. Load the login URL into the Browser.
  2. Click on the link to enter the room.
  3. JAVA security requirement for MAC:
    1. The JAVA security dialog will display.
    2. The cursor is positioned in the security dialog.
    3. Press Tab.
    4. The cursor is positioned on a selection box to "Allow all applets from ..." - by default, it is not selected.
    5. Press the Spacebar to select "Allow all applets from ..."
    6. Press Tab three times - this action will position you at the Allow button.
    7. Press the Spacebar to push the Allow button.
  4. The login form is displayed.
  5. Enter your name and, if required, the password.
  6. Press "Log On".

The next time the user logs in, steps 3a to 3g will not be required or shown. After they click the link to enter the room, users will be taken directly to the form asking for the name and password.
