The new "Web Document Center" is a document management utility which enhances the features of the original Document Center tool. The original Document Center will remain available for some time yet; it does provide some unique functions not available elsewhere.
The Web Document Center provides a utility whereby documents, intended for online meetings, can be managed. Proprietary format files are converted into HTML, streamlining the "pushing" of documents to everyone in a tcConference room.
A fundamental difference between the Document Center and the Web Document Center is where the conversion to HTML occurs. For the Document Center, the conversion occurs on the Moderator's personal computer; therefore, appropriate versions of Microsoft Office plus a Talking Communities PDF converter must be installed on the personal computer. With the Web Document Center, the conversion occurs on the server, and is therefore not dependent on local conversion utilities. A Moderator can now upload, and convert to HTML, any document saved with Microsoft Office or Open Office formats; PDF documents are also included. The Web Document Center can be used with Windows and MACs (plus Linux) whereas the original Document Center is limited to Windows.
Additionally a Moderator can use the Web Document Center to package movie files to easily push the URL to play that movie for every room attendee. There are some logistics (discussed elsewhere) to consider when using these movie files.
