Encryption

Solution

Created August 2013

We have added encryption to our Web Conferencing technology. With this addition voice messages, text messages and login parameters are encrypted. We use the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128 bit implementation. AES is the standard adopted by the US government.

Setting up

You will need the following:

  • A room on our test server - http://test.tcconference.com. We would be pleased to provide such a room if you don't have one. Contact sales@talkingcommunities.com.
  • A special Windows plugin. It is essential all room moderators and participants have this plugin installed.
  • Currently this feature is limited to individuals with Windows XP or newer.

Using the Technology

  1. All participants MUST download and install this plugin: http://test.tcconference.com/aes.exe
  2. Follow the normal procedure to enter the room. DO NOT use the download link on the login page - view tutorial.
  3. Use the room normally. The functionality is identical to rooms without AES enabled.

Cleaning Up

If this is just a short term test, all users MUST re-install the default plugin. To do so, they will click on the download link on the login page.

If this is a long term test (I.E. you plan to use the room with encryption on an ongoing basis), no further action is required.

Known Issues

  • Individual users are unable to communicate or send public text chat messages. The likely cause is the users with this issue have not installed the special plugin or, if this happens after returning to a room without AES enabled they have neglected to re-install the default plugin.
