Using PowerPoint Presentations With Screen Readers

Updated December 2008

Purpose

The purpose of this tutorial is to illustrate how you would use uploaded PowerPoint presentations with screen readers and the web conferencing technology. I am assuming you have already uploaded the presentation into the Document Center and therefore those steps will not be covered.

If you have not done so turn on Follow Me to automatically push the slides to the online audience.

Loading the Presentation Into the co-browser

The first activity is to launch the Document Center and load the appropriate presentation. To do that you need to find the Document Center launch action in the Administrationmenu as follows:
Step 1: Press Alt to select the menu bar.
Step 2: Press m to select the Administration menu.
Step 3: Press d to find Document Center and press Enter.
Step 4: Press Alt+D to navigate to Manage Documents and press Enter.
Step 5: Use the arrow keys to select the presentation and press Alt+T to initiate the Remote option.
Step 6: Press Enter to close the DocumentUploader dialog. This will bring up the slide navigation PowerPoint Remote dialog and you are ready to push the slides.

Simple Navigation

Step 1: Press Enter to advance to the first slide.
Step 2: Continue pressing Enter to advance the slides. Note: If you press Enter after displaying the last slide it will select the Previous button and start working back through the slides.

Advanced Navigation

You may skip forward and backward through the presentation without loading specific slides.

To skip forward press the +/= key twice - this key is immediately to the left of the Backspace key.
To skip backward press the _/- key twice - this key is two keys to the left of the Backspace key.
After skipping to the desired slide press Enter to load the slide into the browser.

You may specify if the presentation will advance to next or to the previous slide. Press the Tab (or Shift+Tab) to select the Next or Previous buttons.

Navigation to other Windows

The PowerPoint Remote dialog will be in focus when you are navigating through the slides. There may be times when you wish to bring another window into focus, such as the Web Conference window so you can, for example, read the content on the slide displayed in the co browser. You would use the Alt+Tab as follows:
Press and hold down the Alt key.
Tap the Tab key until the application you want to bring into focus is selected.
Release the keyboard and the selected application will come into focus.

To return to the PowerPoint navigation diolog, press and hold the Alt key.
Tap the Tab key until the PowerPoint Remote application is selected.
Release the keyboard and the PowerPoint Remote dialog will come into focus. .
